We all have times of feeling overwhelm or stress. Maybe anxious. We are all very human and need a way to feel better when we are in this place. Sometimes we think it means we have to do something big to feel better and maybe at times it does. But many times we have it right in front of us, something small but something that makes us feel good, that makes us feel better right in that moment and time.
I am talking about a practice we can incorporate in our day in which can be a few moments or it can be time we choose to extend for 5 or 10 minutes or more if we so desire. This can be an unexpected or a planned thing. But very practical and doable.
Here is a personal list of my most recent times in which I have found little bursts of joy with relief from my stress or worry or overwhelm.
1. Stepping outside for a quick break and finding a gorgeous butterfly in a flower planter, beautiful patterns on it.
2. Really feeling my shower water wash away worries from my day.
3. Taking in an unexpected compliment. Really letting it sink in.
4. Going outside near dusk and unexpectedly seeing my backyard light up with fireflies. What a beautiful show it was!
5. While out in public, seeing an adorable toddler with curly hair peeking from around a corner looking at me with curiosity.
6. Watching a pair of cardinals with what appeared to be them feeding each other, fascinating.
7. A very kind, helpful customer service person walking me through something I was having trouble with, feeling grateful for her patient manner.
8. My cat, Sophie enjoying her daily dry oatmeal as I enjoyed my morning oatmeal. Mine doctored up with a host of items of course. Who knew my cat would like this? But kind of sweet and endearing.
Are these things going to solve all of my problems. Probably not, but by stopping and pausing my upset, I can let in some good feelings and feel some relief, feeling more hopeful and more grateful for what is going right. Plus, getting my brain out of fight or flight mode and into a more clear, focused, calmer state of mind.
What is your “Little Things” list for the day? The more we focus on these things the more we find them coming into our lives.
Pass on this bit of stress relief to someone who needs it.
