Free Summer 2014 Movies for Tulsa Families and Couples

Want to take in some fun free movies for your family or for you and your honey. Then check out what Tulsa has in store for this summer. Sometimes a movie fits the bill for a fun outing. These can be used as conversations starters to talk about deeper issues or values with your partner or children, etc. So there is a way to make them a bit more substantial as to meaning if you wish. And then there are times for just a fun evening out and not really thinking about any thing but a good laugh and spending time together. So here goes as to what I found for this summer.

Enjoy a film in the Philbrook Museum Gardens on June 26 from 7:30 – 10:30 am. Midnight in Paris with Owen Wilson will showing. The north garden gates are open at 7:30 pm.  The film begins at dusk. Food trucks and entertainment will be part of the evening to celebrate Philbrook’s 75th anniversary.  This is a FREE event to member and non members. All ages are welcome. I am not sure on the rating on this movie. So if you have very young ones you may want to check that out.  For more information you can go to www.philbrook.org . In the event of rain the film will be shown in the Patti Johnson Wilson Hall.

Special Note: All of these movies at the different venues may not be suitable for your children and their specific ages or your specific value system. As always as a parent we have to consciously decide what is best for our children to view.

Woody Guthrie Center – Downtown Tulsa Activity for Families or Couples

The Woody Guthrie Center in Downtown Tulsa would be a lovely winter’s day activity for families or for couples. It is dedicated to the life and legacy of American folk musician and singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie. This interactive museum is appropriate for mid elementary children and up. The center includes:

  • The Dust Bowl Section featuring the viewing of a film on the dust bowl as you listen to some of Woody’s Dust Bowl Ballads. (This was one of my favorite areas. Watching what the dust bowl was like was pretty fascinating.)
  • Music Bar for listening to Woody’s music.
  • Lyric writing station where you can have a hand at creating a lyric.
  • Woody’s America interactive map to learn about Woody’s history.
  • Woody’s Footsteps Exhibit.
  • Woody’s Lyric Journal.
  • Woody’s violin, guitar and mandolin.
  • Original, hand written lyrics of “This Land is Your Land”.

Couple Time or Family Time at the Farmer’s Market

photo-4

Want to connect as you do something good for the environment and healthy for your body. Doing something that is simple, easy and meaningful. GO LOCAL with your marketing.

It is that time of year when the FARMERS MARKETS are in full swing. If this is an activity you have not participated in before, you may want to consider giving it a try. The Tulsa area has several farmer’s markets that sell fresh produce from local farms. Some of these farms grow organic foods. Knowing where your food comes from and building a relationship with some of these farmers is pretty cool.  In addition most of them have local art and handmade products. It is a fun community event where people are there to promote local and to choose products that are good for our environment and more healthy for our bodies. And you will save money!

NOTE: If you take CHILDREN to the market, consider their age and how much walking they can do. For little ones a stroller or wagon can be very helpful. Of course, as with any marketing it is best to go when you are not tired. This especially applies for children.  Consider limiting your time to what your child or children can comfortable manage to keep it a positive experience. Letting your children help pick out your veggies can be fun and educational and allow them to be part of the process. You might expand this activity to a family or parent / child cooking time, using your fresh veggies you purchased at the farmers market.

There are a variety of times these markets are open. I have listed the main markets in the Tulsa area below. The OK Food and Farm Alliance also has a listing of all of OK Farmer’s Markets. So if you are not in one of the Tulsa area towns listed, check out the OK Food and Farm Alliance website okfarmand food.org

Potential Fun Couple’s Date Night: Performance of Shakespeare Play “Much Ado About Nothing”

There are too many events to list, but I wanted to note for a fun couple’s night out you might want to consider a Shakespeare in the Park event that is occurring June 11-June 16 from 8:30 – 10:30 pm with a 7:30 pre show. Much Ado About Nothing  is being preformed. This is a fun romantic comedy. The pre-show will be 40’s music and swing dance.

I hope you will be able to take advantage of this wonderful new Tulsa arts and entertainment park. It has much to offer. Have fun!

Tulsa Rose Garden, Tulsa Garden Center and Woodward Park – A Triple Hit for Mother’s Day (or any spring or summer day)

IMG_1541

You can’t beat the lovely combination of the Tulsa Rose Garden, Tulsa Garden Center and Woodward Park, all rolled into one. The Tulsa Rose Garden is at 24th and Peoria, right next to Woodward Park which is at 21st and Peoria. And the Tulsa Garden Center is on the other side of the Rose Garden. Linnaeus Teaching Garden is behind the Rose Garden and Tulsa Garden Center. These are all FREE to the public.

It is a wonderful time to visit as roses are in bloom and it is Mother’s Day Weekend.  Of course this is a triple hit for any sunny day or early evening for families and for couples.  Walking in 4 and 1/2 acres of roses is heaven. The Rose Garden in done in an Italian Renaissance style with 5 terraces and a reflecting pool.

Take time to enjoy what nature has to offer at this time of year. This is a sure hit with moms, families and a fun place for a romantic get-a-way.

ENJOY!!!
